Why now?

McKinsey predicts that “by 2025, smart workflows and seamless interactions between humans and machines will likely be as standard as the corporate balance sheet, and most employees will use data to optimize nearly every aspect of their work.” Additionally, AI has evolved from the realm of science fiction to become an indispensable tool in our daily lives.

Our increasing access to data and AI raises significant questions: Who should be responsible for how companies store and access these tools? What rules should be implemented to ensure the ethical use of generative AI? How might this influence business strategy and define competitive advantages?

There is no simple answer to any of these questions, which is why companies are increasingly creating C-suite or other leadership roles for data and AI. Based on my close monitoring of the market, I estimate that there has already been a 25% increase in roles such as VP of Data, VP of AI, Chief Data Officer, and Chief AI Officer, and I expect this number to grow in the coming years. McKinsey also predicts that these roles, such as Chief Data Officer, will increasingly function as business units with profit and loss responsibilities. Their work may involve developing a holistic data strategy and generating new sources of revenue.

Every company adopts a slightly different strategy in creating these roles and developing their data and AI capabilities. As a result, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to defining these roles. Organizations must discover what works best for their unique needs and goals.
